Fine pins with small rounded tips and a head about 10.5 cm wide. Roll it back and forth over fabric, open it up, and tip the fur into the bin. No sticky sheets to buy.

Why the two work better together

The brush deals with the dog, and the roller deals with the house. Every bit of loose coat you brush out on the back deck is fur that won't end up on the doona. The roller picks up the rest from the couch, car seat and dog bed.

Weekly routine: five minutes with the brush, then one quick pass of the roller over the couch.

Before visitors: roll the couch cushions and the throw rug, and you're done.

Car trips: brush before you leave and roll the back seat when you get home.

Honest limits: the brush lifts loose fur and small tangles but won't cut out big, tight mats (those need a groomer).
