How to Get Dog Hair Off Your Couch, Car Seats and Clothes
Share
Quick answer: For fabric couches and car seats, a reusable pet hair roller lifts hair fastest: roll it back and forth, then empty the chamber. Finish with a vacuum and a damp rubber glove for corners. On clothes, use the roller or a lint roller just before you leave the house. To get less hair on everything, brush your dog more often during spring and autumn shedding.
Why there's suddenly fur everywhere
Many dogs shed most heavily in spring and autumn, as they swap a thick winter coat for a lighter one and back again. In Australia that means September to November is often the worst stretch on your furniture. Double-coated breeds such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Kelpies, Border Collies and German Shepherds drop the most. The extra fur is usually normal, but sudden bald patches, red or itchy skin or a dull coat are worth a vet check.
Couches and upholstered chairs
- Roll first. A reusable hair remover roller works on fabric with short back-and-forth strokes. The hair collects in a chamber you tip into the bin. There are no sticky sheets to buy.
- Vacuum second with an upholstery tool to pick up dust and fine hairs.
- Rubber glove trick for seams: put on a slightly damp rubber dishwashing glove and wipe along cushions and seams. Hair balls up so you can pick it off.
- Cover the dog's favourite spot with a washable throw. Shake it outside and wash it weekly in shedding season.
Honest tip: rollers like ours work best on smooth fabric upholstery. On thick, rough rugs, a vacuum or a rubber broom does better. Test on a small, hidden area first.
Car seats and the boot
- Fabric car seats grab hair like velcro. A few passes with a roller lifts most of it before you vacuum.
- Rubber floor mats can be hosed or wiped. Carpet in the boot benefits from a rubber brush.
- A washable seat cover or old towel on the back seat saves a lot of cleaning after beach and park trips.

Beds and bedding
Run a roller over the doona cover before you wash it, or tumble it for 10 minutes on a cool setting first to loosen hair into the lint filter. Clean the washing machine filter after dog bedding loads.
Clothes
Keep a roller near the front door and do a quick pass on your way out. A roller with a chamber is handy on jumpers and black work pants. A short tumble-dryer cycle before washing also loosens hair.
Stop the fur at the source: brush more often
Every hair you brush out is one that doesn't land on the couch. During shedding season, brush most double-coated dogs several times a week, ideally outside. Pick the brush for your dog's coat: a slicker brush or undercoat rake for thick double coats, a rubber curry brush or mitt for short coats. A bath with a good dog shampoo, then a thorough brush once dry, loosens lots of dead undercoat in one go.
What doesn't help
- Shaving a double-coated dog: the coat helps protect from sun and heat. Talk to a groomer or vet first.
- Overbathing: it can dry out skin. Every few weeks is usually plenty unless your vet advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions
What's the fastest way to get dog hair off a couch?
A reusable pet hair roller with short back-and-forth strokes, followed by a quick vacuum. A damp rubber glove handles the seams.
Do reusable pet hair rollers really work?
On most smooth fabric upholstery, yes. They're less effective on rough rugs and very loose weaves, so test on a small area first.
When is dog shedding season in Australia?
Many dogs shed most in spring (around September to November) and again in autumn, though dogs kept mostly indoors can shed lightly all year.
How do I get dog hair out of my car seats?
Roll the seats, then vacuum with a crevice tool. A rubber brush helps on boot carpet. Use a washable seat cover to cut future cleaning.
Is heavy shedding a sign something's wrong?
Seasonal shedding is normal. See your vet if you notice bald patches, sores, constant scratching or a sudden change in your dog's coat.
